Technological
Strides of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (I)
Ahmadu
Bello University (ABU), Zaria, one of the first generation Nigerian Universities
is no doubt an icon of nation building considering its giant contributions
since establishment over fifty years ago. The University with two campuses,
occupying 7,000 hectares of land has grown to become the largest in the nation
and indeed in the West African Sub-region, and the most influential and diverse
in the country. It has about 100 Academic Departments, twelve (12) Faculties,
and six (6) Research Institutes and twelve (12) Research/specialized Centres. With
the students population of over 40,000 and staff strength of over 5,000, the
contribution of ABU to national and regional developments has no limit. This is
because the common feature of both the staff and student population is the wide
variety of social, cultural, religious and economic backgrounds that they
represent. This unique feature of the University's diversity, different from
other Universities in Nigeria shows that both staff and students come from all
parts of the country and from neighborhood. To better appreciate the diversity of ABU is
when one attends the senate session of the University, the highest decision
making body on academic matters; issues are discussed intellectually and
intelligently making one to be confused on the right direction but the end
objectivity carries day. This is because the University senate is a gathering
of "who was who/who is who" in Nigerian Political power corridor and
technocrats as there are former Ministers, Commissioners, Special Advisers and
the die-hard academics sitting to discuss issues.Thediversity has placed ABU
stronger and robust in achieving its mission while making effective
contributions to all spheres of human endeavor
